Daytona 500 Daytona International Speedway , 2015/02/22
Well the NASCAR season opener is hours away. The great American race or the Daytona 500. With all the rule changes we have seen over the off season, its going to be an interesting opener to the season. Two and half miles make up a lap and we should see around 200 laps of the finest racing NASCAR has to offer.
The big news would be that Kurt Busch has been suspended by NASCAR as a result of a protection order that was issued against him by a former girlfriend because of domestic violence. He has appealed the ruling and lost and apparently a second appeal was prepared and he lost that to. So Kurt will not be taking part in this years race and is being replaced by Regan Smith.
After a massive accident last night in the XFINITY series, Kyle Busch was injured and broke leg and a foot and he also will not be taking part. We hope that he makes a speedy recovery from his injuries. The accident itself was as a result of a big accident, but for Kyle he slipped through the infield and hit an unprotected section of concrete wall ... head on. There really should be no reason for that piece of infield wall should be solid concrete and with out a safer barrier in place.
It seems that two possible winners will be out without having started an engine.
The Favorites to win
Denny Hamlin. After what can only be described as a massively over aggressive display in the duels, you still have to say that he is a contender to win. For those of you that follow this blog you will know that I was very harsh on Danica Patrick for having moved over onto Hamlin's line during practice as I felt that this was partly to blame for the accident that put Danica into her backup car and facing the possibility of not qualifying. As it turns out Danica fought hard to get herself into the top 10 during the dual only to have Hamlin push then nudge her into a spin. It was only through pure guts and hard work that she was able to recover to 10th position and having her qualify for the race. Amazingly Hamlin tried to defend his actions as he and Danica had words after the race. After a review of the video footage Hamlin had to change his view. If he can keep out of trouble he is my pick to win.
Brad Keselowski. Brad has never won at Daytona but if we consider his performance in the chase in 2014, this could be his year. Having not made a huge amount of friends during the chase last year, you have to say thathe wants to win and wants to be champ again.
Dale Earnhart Jr. Always popular and in a phenomenal team. Last years winner. He has every thing he needs to win and who can really bet against him. I certainly would not.
Kevin Harvick. Twice a winner before at Daytona. Defending champ and very successful at Super speedways, Kevin has got to be a favorite to win.
The Outsiders.
These are the guys that can sneak a win if the favorites don't keep a close watch.
Jimmie Johnson. who has an incredible race to win average can never be ruled out.
Jeff Gordon. Loves to win on restrictor plate super Speedways, but has not won on one since 2007. This is his last year though before he retires, so its more than possible he is going to give it everything he has to win.
Austin Dillon. A pole winner at Daytona and a very fast driver. He could win here.
Kyle Larson. Young and very talented, his first win could be at Daytona, if not Daytona it cant be to far away.
Danica Patrick. A pole winner, very fast on Super Speedways. She has leading laps at Daytona and Talladega She could get her first win at Daytona. Starting way down on the grid she will have to work hard but its still possible.
Tony Stewart. He has won at Daytona 4 times. Loves to win at Super Speedways. His last 4 starts though at Daytona and Talledega have seen him finish outside the top30. Still never discount smoke.
What ever the results are though we will see an epic race and the start to another awesome season.
Go Danica!!!

Budweiser Duels Daytona International Speedway 2015/02/19
Sometimes its difficult to understand how some people just cant get a break. Many people would argue that Danica Patrick has caught more than her share of breaks through the first decade of her career and that may be the truth in some ways. When it comes to racing though, she has been very unlucky at times. Her qualifying wreck is just one of those times.
After wrecking in qualifying in an incident which well left me scratching my middle aged head. She had to go to her backup car. Contact was made between Danica and Denny Hamlin. Hamlin seemed to go into a space on Danica's left and essentially go three wide in the turn and Danica drifted over onto his line and contact send her into the wall and she collected two other cars on the way. Her car was destroyed.
The images below are taken from Fox13now.com.
Hamlin still behind Danica
Hamlin starts making his move
Hamlin just about 3 wide Danica starts moving over
The last shot before Contact pay careful attention to the angles of the lines on the roofs of the cars and the rear wheel arches. Danica's car is turning in while Hamlin and even Smoke's cars appear to be going straight. Shes turning in.
Contact ! Notice the attitude of the number 10 in relation to the other cars, also watch the space on Hamlin's left.
Perhaps the contact is exaggerating this shot but here you can see how far Danica has come over and how far Hamlin has moved over.
At first when I saw the incident I thought, "Danica why did you move over?" then watching the replay over and over I started to think, "Denny why did you leave the draft and go three wide right there?" I suppose some may say well its clearly her fault and others would say its Hamlin's fault. It really depends which side of the fence you sit on. If you are a Danica fan you will blame Hamlin and if you're a Hamlin fan, you'll be blaming Danica.
One thing is for sure though and that is that Hamlin was very aggressive considering that this is practice not the race. You really don't need to be that aggressive and at the end of the day Danica came out of all of this with the most damage to her car by far.
Hamlin did come within a whisker of admitting that it was his fault by saying only that he supposes that this was his fault because its only practice and you don't need to take risks like that in practice.
My personal opinion ..... I would blame both of them. Hamlin's move to go three wide was in my opinion bordering on semi brain fade and he seemed to have put himself in a tight spot that was always gonna have him in a tight space. As you can see from the images above he came very close to the cars on his inside. I don't think that any of the other drivers expected him to do that. Everyone else was two wide at that point. A classic commentator in Formula One, Murry Walker once said, "No race is ever won by the first turn and you need to get through it first to stand a chance of winning". All of this happened in practice they were not even in the race yet. So why do that? Why take that chance? Who knows.
As for Danica..... well I am sad to say as a huge fan that she moved over into him, Why I am not sure, she may not have seen him, her spotter may not have told her he was there, Hamlin's lunge over to the center was very sudden but the fact still remains she moved over and it looked very much like she was blocking the move. Its as clear as daylight on that replay. Have a look at the pictures above and you will notice that the angles of the roofs and wheel arches of all the other cars seem to be straight however just before the contact Danica's are not and she is moving over. It almost appears as aggressive a move as Hamlin's going three wide.
I am a huge fan but I have to stay objective other wise I am no different to the prejudice filled uninformed crazies that seem to patrol the twitter feeds looking for anything that's Danica related, to spread their Danica negativity. Perhaps Danica is going to be more aggressive this year and take more chances. In this case perhaps she wanted to show that she is willing to mix things up. If that is the case, then yes, Hamlin knows now that he is not gonna push her around, she will close that door that last season seemed to be permanently open. She will also know now that fighting back sometimes leaves you worse off. This is all speculation though because after her wrecked Chevy came to a stop on the infield grass she says,"Who hit me?" Confirming that she has no idea what just happened.
The most obvious answer though is ..... "That is racing!" simply put.
Qualifying was really a bit of a disaster.
With a new qualifying format that leaves you wondering if you actually understand this correctly? I wish that NASCAR would just leave certain things alone. Qualifying should be about doing the best you can, setting the fastest time you can. It should not be about qualifying in a gaggle of other cars, in groups and then work out how long and who was this and who did that ... and because this happens sorry but now your affected.... I mean really why don't use some algebra or perhaps include some Pythagoras...... to really complicate things.
Just let them qualify...
Danica qualified with only the 32nd fastest time. Then she was involved in the wreck and that ultimately is very bad news for Danica. She would have started in 16th spot for the first Duel, but now because she is in the backup car, she goes to the back of the grid. More bad news. She will have to finish no lower than 15th in the qualifier race to make the start of the Daytona 500.
At this point one more mistake, one more wreck, one more problem could take her out of the Daytona 500 completely. That has to be weighing very heavily on her mind at this time. Danica is a driver who is very in touch with all her sponsors and she will be without a single shadow of a doubt be wanting to do her absolute best for them.
She needs to be conservative in her approach and her only goal at this point should be to make it to the race. Once there she can give it everything she has and do the best she can.
Not making the race would be an absolute disaster for Danica.
I will be holding my rabbits foot, polishing my horse shoe, collecting as many four leaf clovers as I can, wishing on every shooting star and holding firmly onto every wishbone I can get my hands on.
Good luck Danica

Number 10 rising?
So I am an un apologetic and proud fan of Danica Patrick. There I said it. I admire her and I don't think she has it easy, despite the Twitter feeds and the Facebook messages I read.
So I consider myself to be fair, levelheaded and un biased. If I am wrong normally I am the first to admit that. When Danica does not do to well in a race, I don't try to sweet talk it away or candy coat it. I say, " She had a bad race!" end of story.
This got me thinking though. Are all these opinions of Danica, some good and others bad based on anything other than opinion? I mean we all have one. Some are valid, constructive, but most of them are uninformed, un constructive and to put it plainly resemble more of a prejudice than opinion.
While discussing Danica on the DanicaPack Facebook group I was reminded by one of the members that Danica really has not had to many starts and in terms of drivers in NASCAR she finds herself in that area where she is no longer new, but she really isn't a part of the furniture yet... (So to speak!). I think that many people would disagree when I say she has probably been the most talked about driver in NASCAR. sometimes for the right reasons and many times for all the wrong reasons. Some criticism of her in my book has been completely fair and other criticism completely off the mark and uncalled for really.
I decided to have a look at this myself and I was surprised at what I found.
For your convenience I have put a table of statistics for your enjoyment.
So the first thing you will notice is that the stats are arranged with the best average finish on top.
The first thing that just jumps out at you is that Jimmie Johnson wins on average every 7 races. That is astounding. Consider that Jeff Gordon has raced almost double the number of races that Jimmie has and on average wins every 8 races.
However for me the most impressive is Kyle Larson. Yes he hasn't won a race as yet, but he has the 11th best average finish figure and he has only raced 40 races..... WOW.
Getting back to Danica.
For someone who has only competed in 82 races, she has a better Average finish than many drivers who have competed in more races including many drivers that have competed in less races than she has.
I decided to do some research to see if there are many people who have taken longer to win a race than what she has raced currently and I found that a number of drivers that have won, have taken a long time to win and it seems that Danica is in good company.Regan Smith, David Ragan, Casey Mears, Aric Almirola,Michael Waltrip,A J Allmendinger,Paul Menard, and Marcus Ambrose to mention just a few.
Of course many drivers have taken less races to win than she has, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth to mention just a few.
My personal opinion is that Danica is very definably not the best driver out there and she would probably be the first to admit that herself. She also very definably is not the worst driver out there. In my book she is very competitive at some tracks and not so competitive at others. She is not as consistent as she needs to be and she needs to work on her restarts cause she seems to loose light years on many of those to her competitors.
If she was finishing 10 laps down race after race and 10 seconds a lap slower, I would be the first to say OK she needs to give up her seat. The truth is though that she runs competitive laps, she leads, she takes pole positions and yes she seems to be stronger on long tracks than the shorter ones, but she beats many drivers with much more experience than she has in plate racing on a weekly basis.
In a race format where winning for the most seems to be a bit of a Lottery at times it surly is only a question of time before she also gets that first win. Who knows time will tell, but what is very real is that this year is very much a make or break year for Danica. I believe that she will rise to the occasion.
Week after week I read the comments on Twitter and on Facebook and mostly the comments and opinions are un or miss informed or just completely biased. There are very few educated opinions about Danica. I wonder though if the haters realise that her fans dont take their comments seriosuly and considering that she just keeps bringing those sponsors in, neither do they take those comments to heart. While those comments are being made, she is usually working and working hard, being a role model to many young kids and an absolute inspiration to so many. Just perhaps that is part of the secret to her success?
Love her or hate her .... one thing is for sure she has helped NASCAR just as much as NASCAR has helped her. The haters ....... well the haters better hope she doesn't win, cause when she does and perhaps becomes a regular winner, her popularity is really going to explode.
Have fun with the stats below, its very interesting to identify trends and draw your own conclusions.
